A4D Monthly Meeting February 23, 5:00-6:30pm Join us for Act for Democracy’s monthly meeting next Tuesday, February 23, from 5:00-6:30pm. Jamie McLeod-Skinner, whom many of us know and admire from her recent campaign for Oregon Secretary of State, will be our guest speaker. She’ll speak on a topic close to her heart, bridging the divide. Her talk will include techniques on how we can rebuild our social fabric to work together to fix what’s broken and build healthier, more equitable communities and a stronger economy. Jamie has a lifelong commitment to building healthy, equitable, and resilient communities and is optimistic about our potential to heal the fractures in our society. An excellent way to prepare for our meeting with Jamie is to watch the short film, Other Side of the Hill, which focuses on rural perspectives on a changing climate. Simply click on the join-free on-demand screening button for a riveting and informative 30-minute immersion in the topic. To register for Tuesday’s meeting, click here. You will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. A4D Supports Gun Legislation Act for Democracy is proud to announce its support of the following bills that are under consideration in the 2021 Legislative Session. HB 2510 requires the owner or possessor of a firearm to secure the firearm with a trigger or cable lock in a locked container or gun room, except in specified circumstances. SB396 bans ghost guns, which are undetectable and/or untraceable firearms, such as those produced by 3-D printers. SB554 allows schools, the Portland airport, and public buildings like the State Capitol to prohibit guns. HB2543 prohibits gun sales unless a background check is completed, closing the Charleston loophole. You can find out more about these bills here. We urge you to call, email, or write your legislator to support these bills. You can find your legislator and contact information here. Postcard Writing is Underway Writing postcards is a rewarding way to make a difference during these troubling times. Act for Democracy’s postcard writers have their sleeves rolled up and are ready to write again in support of democracy. The current campaign is a state senate seat in southwest Virginia, which is no longer a Democratic stronghold. The GOP, however, is in disarray, and there’s a chance to keep district 38 from slipping away. We need to leverage early voting in this campaign to bank an early lead and take advantage of the fact that Republicans are still turned off by the rhetoric against vote by mail. For new writers who’d like to join in, use the following sample script and mail your cards when complete. You can purchase prepaid postcards from the post office or online. Dear Virginia Voter, We need Democrat Laurie Buchwald in the State Senate to lead southwest Virginia out of the Covid crisis and rebuild our communities. Please vote early by mail.
