Dear OSTPDX Members,
What’s happening in Portland right now is alarming. National right wing media is actively painting Portland as a city under siege to justify Trump’s political stunt to deploy militarized federal agents to quell weeks of protests.
Ironically, the protests are a direct consequence of constant police brutality. During the six weeks of protests, Portland police have indiscriminately beat and tear gassed protesters exercising their first amendment rights and now the uninvited federal agents are following suit. Over the weekend, federal police tear gassed a crowd of peaceful protesters that included Multnomah County Commissioner Sharon Meieran. Let’s be sure to let our representatives know that we want the Feds out of Portland now and join tonight’s protest if you can.
Announcements
Pursuant to the pledge One Small Thing took to support the eventual Democratic nominee in the presidential campaign to defeat Trump, we will be joining the Consolidated Oregon Indivisible Network (COIN) in endorsing the following five candidates in the November election:
-Joe Biden, President
-Jeff Merkley, Senator
-Shemia Fagan, Secretary of State
-Ellen Rosenblum, Attorney General
-Tobias Read, State Treasurer
In addition to the presidential race this November, COIN determined that there are “must wins” races at the state level if we are to continue to enact and carry out progressive policies in Oregon.
What this will mean is that we will add our logo to the COIN logo in amplifying these endorsements. We will also give these campaigns permission to use our name and logo in publicizing these endorsements. We will encourage our membership to support these candidates. But we will not share our membership lists with these campaigns.
